Tricia Carsley

How long does it usually take for symptoms to subside with Sulfasalazine, for those that have tried the drug. I've been on it for a couple weeks, gradually increasing my dose and have not had any more fevers, and way less lethargic. The swelling in my ankles and severe back pain is still there, but I was able to get out of bed without help today. I am praying the drug is working but skeptical I am just having a good week. I would really like to hear some experiences from others. Thanks?

Hi Tricia -I have some unfortunate experiences with Sulfasalazine.  My rheumie started that and we kept increasing to maximum dosage.  It did not work at all.I then went to Humira, then Enbrel, then MTX oral and now MTX injection of .7 ml.I also take Tramadol 300 mg day and Celebrex PRN.

It took me about 6-8 weeks, I was also on Prednisolone and Indomethacin extended release...I used about 1500-2000 mg of Sulfasalazine from 1988 to 2006 or so - I started TNF blockers in 2001, by 2006 I had been given enough relief from Remicade to drop all other drugs (short of a VERY ocassional pain med, now Tramodal)

With Sulfasalazine I always needed the coated tablets, otherwise heart/throat burn was a problem....Good luck!

I have been on sulfazine for several months.  It did take some time as we increased my dose.  My doctor would like me to increase to 2500mgs. But the extra 500 bothered my stomach the 3 times I tried to increase.  It does help a bit.  My numbers are still high (crp and sed rate) but my stomach is sensitive so I hate to switch around meds when I'm getting some relief.  I also take meloxicam.  Give it a little more time before you decide to stop would be my advice.

I was on sulfasalazine for a number of years prior to the TNF blockers. In my experience, it takes about 8 weeks to really feel the full effects of it. I took it in conjunction with Voltaren because I found that just the sulfasalazine alone wasn't enough. Something important to remember that perhaps your rheumy has already told you; periodic labs (at least every 3 months) are necessary to check liver function. Don't take Tylenol while on sulfasalazine; it's hard on your liver.

I've been on sulfasalazine for about 6-8 months. It took up to 2 months to get the full effect. But it was gradual for me, like youre explaining. It helps get me out of bed too :) Still had a fair amount of breakthrough pain so we added methotrexate about 5 weeks ago. I could have lived with just sulfasalazine and naproxen but my labs were just trending too high and I wont take pain meds so we added the mtx. Anyhow, I say give sulfasalazine a full 2 months before you make any long term decisions. I hope it continues working well for you!! :)
