I've been on enbrel for7 wks now & it's amazing! :-) I would however like to try acupuncture in conjunction. Does anyone know if it interferes with Enbrel or if it's helpful?

My Rheumy referred me to a PT who started dry needle therapy, which as he informed me was a western form of Acupuncture...it main purpose was to "reset" the muscles and improve my mobility, which it did especially for my neck. I was also taking Enbrel at the time....saw no interference.
I use acupuncture and Enbrel in conjunction with each other. I don't believe that it is just a placebo because I was VERY skeptical of acupuncture before I tried it. I hold a Master of Science degree, and I did my homework by reading the research. The research shows that for the treatment of arthropathies, it has an efficacy similar to what TNF blockers alone can achieve. I have not seen any research isolated to acupuncture as a treatment of AS, however, and I'd not be surprised to see a lower efficacy when the study is isolated to our specific illness.
I think alternative treatments are effective in dealing with issues of mechanical pain. For me, acupuncture is not entirely helpful during a flare up. I have had far better luck with deep tissue massage, nutritional changes, and Chinese medications. There are some Chinese medications I now choose over the American pharmaceuticals, as they are far more effective. My experience with AS has led me to understand that there is no one cure for this illness. You must be willing to engage it at many battle sites and with varied armaments. That's just my opinion.

I tried Acupuncture early into my diagnosis when I was having problems with my hip. It does relieve the pain, but it is short lived. It shouldn't have any affect on any medications that you are taking.
It is great for when you have those excruciating pains that nothing else will touch. It allows you to get some short term relief. Ultimately, though, you want to get any inflammation under control.

I have no experience of this and would be interested to hear how you get on if you decide to try it, I would say that I can see no reason why it would interfere
I talked to my rheumy about this because I was going to start doing acupuncture and he told me he was ok with it. I never did it though because my insurance wouldn't cover it at the time and it was too expensive for me.
