Does anyone else crave food just before a flare? In recent weeks - in addition to a fever - I've found myself inexplicably starving and consuming a lot of calories. I wonder if it's related? Does anyone else find their hunger level changes?

WOW! I thought it was just me. I get to the point I have the shakes especially when I stick to higher protein lower carb meals as all the AS diets recommend. Right before a flare I crave all the stuff I know I shouldn't have and it only gets worse as the pain gets worse. The Doc says "just don't eat it. Don't give in and throw bad on top of bad" but it's like my body won't let me say no. Can't sink a sunk ship twice anyway.
I think our bodies try to compensate in general in life with a "basic need." for instance if you're really tired and need sleep but have to stay up, sometimes youll stay up and just eat a lot because instead of the sleep basic need, your giving yourself food as a substitute. Or if you're lonely craving company sometimes we turn to food for comfort. So when we feel a flare coming on we get scared, so we turn to food as a substitute/comfort. I don't think the AS actually makes you hungry or your stomach emptier...
Well folks I must have been in a flare for the last 10 yrs., cause my hunger levels has never changed...Still trying to find a med. That will help with pain..
It's probably not related but I can tell you that I have never experienced anything like the munchies I got on prednisone!!
I don't know why you are, but I know I
get to be STARVING and eat all the time when I go into a flair up. I
have digestion problems thanks to immune issue with my AS but I just
found out my answer to that question when I was in the hospital. I
got to speak with a dietitian. In my case before and threw a flair
up, I eat like a pig. I graze all the time and I am starving! She
gave me samples of "Unjury", its medical quality protein that you mix
up with liquid and drink. I get it off the their site. Its helped me
feel fuller and have more energy I am hoping it will help me stop
this hungry thing I go threw. She said its something to do with the
way we process and digest protein, she uses it too, and she told me
she also has AS. Has your Doc drawn blood to make sure your absorbing
Vitamin D and others too? Fever, can be many things but I get a fever when my AS is really pitching a bad flair up but ask your Doc to make sure you don't have an infection somewhere.

Never noticed either one before a flare i usualy dont get fevers but i will certainly start keeping the caloric intake in mind when the next one comes around. Good catch!
I've felt that way for a year now. I don't know if its the Humira or what, it's the only med I'm still on that I started last September. The doctor tells me it's just me. But I feel like I'll die if I'm not eating. I've tried switching to low fat things, diet and no sugar. Though watch out if you eat no sugar candies to get over the cravings. Eat a bunch, end up with time on the toilet.
Do you guys think its maybe our immune systems way of bulking up to fight the things we don't want it to?
I am definitely super hungry before and during a flare. I'm not sure what actually sparks it but it happens, every time.
