They are called hypnic jerks and arent dangerous in and of themselves but they sure aren't fun to experience and can impact on the quality of sleep. Its also possible to get similar kinds of muscle twitches during the day and those are called myoclonic jerks. More info on both here;

Yes, at least 3 nights a week. Makes it hard to get to sleep and also to stay asleep
OMG.....I have had the "twitches" for so long. My pain doc told me it was withdrawals. But the funny thing is it happens when I have my medication. My husband says it scares him and that he is going to take video of me when it happens. I knew it wasn't withdrawals, But to tell a doctor what you think isn't happening.
I knew i wasn't crazy. I think I am going to try to print some of this stuff out so I can show it to the doctors.
I am so happy that this site is here. I really need to find some doctors who understand AS better.
So i wonder where we go and just how we bring this up to our doctors.

I also get them. My husband has not said anything, but we both have noticed that when I am waken up I jump and I am startled. I never use to do that. The jeks happen most of the time as I am falling asleep or during sleep. Every once in a while during the day.
I was reading the link Scott posted and I found something interesting. I also suffer from sleep walking (parasomnias). I did as a child and when I use to drink. In fact my husband found me stomping on a glass after a heavy night of drinking and had to rush me to the hospital to get stitches. I still sleep walk but I only know about it if I change things around such as a light turned on when I know I turned it off.
Yeah i get this pretty bad too, my girlfriend is constantly complaining to me, about how i attack her in her sleep... I have to keep her inline some how... Lol I have noticed it is settling down with treatment.
I, too have this, but didn't know what it was from. It seems to me to be like muscle jerks.........
I just asked my PC about that, cause just as I'm falling to sleep i'll jump and several times through the night.. I wake myself screaming to. I think i jump and it scares me, I scream then that scares me and that scream wakes me up then...The doc said that its probably the fibro causeing it..
Yes, when and if I do get to sleep, I get them, my husband tells me they are bad all the time, and I know I have awoke from them, usually because it cause's me to move a way my body becomes in pain.
