I've seen many of you folk commenting on having food allergies...care to expand on that and do you feel it's related to AS.?. If so, do you feel better when you delete that food from your diet?
I have had severe food allergies all my life and was diagnosed with AS in february 2010. I am 26 today. I also have eosinophilic esophagitis (another type of immune reaction in the esophagus). I have a feeling if my immune system would act right I wouldn't have all this crap. It's like my immune system attacks my esophagus, attacks any food I'm allergic to, and attacks my spine (AS) so if the D*** doctors would just figure out how to make my immune system act right and calm down I wouldn't have ANY of this!!

No food allergies to speak of. No special diet just eating healther. When I eat fast food or highly processed food I tend to flare. These act like a trigger for me. Since I have cut these from my diet, I feel better. I stick with whole grain cereals and breads, eat loads of fresh or frozen vegetables and fruit. I do not try the glutton free or any of the other "diet" plans out there because "diets" tend to fail, or I should say people fail to stay on their diets.
Before I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Collitis or As I was becoming allergic to many of my favorite foods. Bananas started the ball rolling then it went on to cilantro and avacados. Now because of digestive issues I can no longer do any type of raw vegtables and any green vegtables. It has gotten really difficult to find healthy foods to eat. Because of the UC I am assuming, I can no longer eat chocalate or caffeine of any kind. I do not have any issue with splenda and am totally in love with this sweetner as of right now. I will take what I can get.
I am allergic to Equal (aspartame) and splenda (sacrolose). Gives me huge welts that swell at pressure points like feet, knees, shoulders, etc. That has made me gain a lot of weight.
I guess you can't reply to a specific answer, but Kristin, it's interesting that you were diagnosed with eosinophilic esophagitis. I'm 35 and have been diagnosed with AS for about 4 years (had it almost 10 years longer than that though and no one could diagnose). Anyway, I was also just diagnosed with this esophagus problem a couple months ago. I find it interesting and wonder if it's related. The allergist couldn't find any specific food allergy but now I'm wondering if my wonderfully crazy immune system is to blame! It is a bad feeling to feel as if food is stuck in your throat. Have you had any luck calming this condition?
Actually one of my vices is considered a trigger (for fibromyalgia but I believe it triggers AS as well) which is aspertame- the stuff used to make diet sodas and zero calorie drinks- which super suck for me cause I love cherry coke zero!! Luckily I am a vegetarian that already eats pretty healthy so I kinda cheat on the soda thing:) One thing that makes me feel better though is the creamy nutrition drinks- I highly recommend the walgreens chocolate ones- so yummy- if I am feeling crappy I take my medicine with one of them and notice it makes me feel a little more human
For me, it's not so much an allergy issue, as it is a "trigger" issue, triggering inflammation, pain etc.
Do I feel better deleting that food? Absolutely!!

Thanks for responding Michelle, ok, holding my breath for your answer...hoping it's not my favorite food.....which food/s seem to trigger inflammation?
(hoping it's not peanut butter)
LOL...in fact, peanut butter (as long as you're not allergic to it!), is a great source of protein. Some of my "trigger foods"....cheese, high fat foods (meals from fast food joints...don't eat there!), too much processed "anything." Starches, when not balanced properly. Anything fried!
