For those of you who have hip pain, can you tell me about your hip pain? I thought I had sciatic nerve pain but now I think it might be my left hip! Please share what you can about how your hip pain started... And your symptoms. :) Thanks

Hi I have had both my hips replaced in 88 & 92 and I still remember the pain bad sciatica in the buttock down my legs in the groin and my knees were the pain was bad but when I my hips replaced they all went a way now in 2012 it just started to sneak back but only very mild . Hope things are ok with you pain wise .
I found this thread very interesting, please make sure everyone check for hip pain for their new borns to, this is called Developmental dysplasia of the hip my son had it when he was born, and thank god for some good people's advice we had to take care of it as soon as possible.
I agree with Jessica, that is exactly what living with this monster is like. To answer the question....The pain you are describing is more than likely the sacro area. If it was your hips you would probably be able to feel it from the outside by pressing on the ar.ea. Hip is less likely to feel better with movement too at least in my experience, Lots of hot showers or lying in a hot tub can help.
I'm the same as Jessica with my back. Few hours sleep get up potter about rest etc. My hip clicks when I rest to long but after walkin for a while it pops. Sometimes enough pain to drop me to my knees. Physio said I walk a bit strange. Yeh she would if her hip/groin was bein tortured
My hip pain switches from hip to hip and depends on how I slept or was sitting down. I try to stretch many times a day to fight the pain that feels like my idea of two bones rubbing together. I also take ENBREL a little less than once per week. I have had this pain for ten years, ever since I was diagnosed with AS and it has been so bad that I have not been able to get out of bed. I feel that my pain has lessened with all of the physical training that I have been doing for endurance sports. I also feel that my job helps, which keeps me on my feet for my entire shift. I hope this is helpful. www.helgiolafson.blogspot.com
My hip pain started after the birth of my second child. Drs kept telling me it was a hip flexor issue - I did P/T, ice, hot, stretch, dont stretch, chiro care, swimming, meds...nothing was helping. Took my 5 yrs to finally get a Dr to LISTEN to me and I am not making up this pain! Finally, he ordered an MRI and at that point my hip was degenerated so bad I had to have a total hip replaced at age 38. How many times have I heard "But your too young!" Really!!??? No kidding!!! LOL! Dont let Drs brush it aside, make sure you take care of YOU!!
Hi there, I am 40 years old and my hip pain started in my twenties, and lasted about 12 years, but thankfully it has slowed down now. I have only just been diagnosed with AS, but have been living with the symptoms since my teenage years. When the hip pain first started it was killer. I remember the first time it hit, I couldn't get out of bed. After that it would be very painful to walk. It would come in go, in flare ups, and it would go from left to right at various times. I started to take glucosamine sulfate, and I thought that was working, but I have since stopped taking it, and the symptoms have not returned. Once in a while I might get a little twinge of soreness, but nothing disabling. Recently I have had xrays in my sacral pelvic area and the results have shown damage, but no fusing. I think my immune system has somewhat stableized for now, in that area, and has since moved along up to my back, stomach, and neck, where I get most of my pain.
I have a frozen sacraliac for Bout 15 years, I am 67. I noticed that at times if I walked slowly, the pain was greater than if I walked faster. The discomfort I feel when I walk is not a pain one feels when you get tired from walking. It really is a discomfort, but enough to make me sit down, rest, get up and go.
Those who have AS have to rest a little longer. AS, I think , affect everyone a little different. Maybe, because of where AS rooted in the 1st place. The most important thing to overcome pains caused by AS is to have stronger energy to do things that you want to do than the energy stemming from the AS.
I hope someday medical world can make drug AS drug that can cure the illness, without side effects.. I believe it's his footprints that help us get thru it all.

Thanks Jesse, I get pain whilst walking in my buttock, and in my groin and for the longest time I thought it was my left SI joint getting worse, and it may still be. But I had steroid injections that helped quite a bit with everyday pain and stiffness but had zero effect on this pain. Sometimes it hurts so bad to walk I have to take like little baby steps, and not leg my hip joint go pas vertical, out behind me. I see my doctor in August, so I guess i'll bring it up with him. I try to stay active, I live on a farm and I have horses and I keep riding despite the pain and exhaustion, I also have a 4 year old daughter and she keeps me hopping... Thank you for your feedback
I hav had hip pain for about five years now. I was only recently diagnosed with AS and have only had two rounds of Enbrel so far so I have not yet found relief from the pain. My pain is like a knife directly in my joint. I also thought mine was sciatica and had multiple surgeries trying to relieve the pain. Like others who have commented my pain starts after sitting for any length of time or when I sit on the floor to play with my kids. After walking for a few minutes the pain usually subsides. I am very hopeful that the Enbrel helps relieve some of this pain. Hope this helps.
Thanks Elizabeth, mine started probably last November(ish) and I thought it was my left SI joint just worsening, but now I don't know. I had steroid injections which failed to improve the symptoms. The pain is like a knife stabbing and it sort of shoots down my leg. Sometimes I can hardly walk because of it... Thank you for your feedback
I used to have a similar problem before Humira. I was told by my doc that the Inflamation is actually occurring in the sacro-iliac joint (SI). Gentle exercise often helps relieve pain but flare ups are harder to handle and often mean having to hobble around for a few days.
Thanks Dan, I thought this was my SI joint, but instead of improving with movement it gets worse, to the point that I can hardly walk without limping like crazy. I try to stay so active ,we have a farm and a 4 year old daughter and I have horses that I try to ride as much as possible. Thank you for your feedback.
It depends , I goes from left to right but mostly in my right leg, and sometimes both! The pain I feel can not be reached on the outside. And it is in my but really. Right in the hip. Usually when I get up from sitting for a long time its pretty painful and I have to use a cane but once it gets "warmed up" it not as painful. Sometimes its gets so bad that I have to take baby steps and stop for a minute and other days I don't have it at all. I never know.
It hurts to cough, to sneeze, so lay flat, to lay on your side, to cross your legs or to roll out of bed or get in/out of a car... It hurts all the time just aching and throbbing. That's what its like for me anyways
