How long after being infected with chlamydia does Ankylosing Spondylitis symptoms kick in? My father has the disease, I haven't tested if I have the gene, but have been diagnosed with chlamydia that triggers the disease. After half a year of being with chlamydia, I don't have lower back pain, but very numb upper back pain and I can crack my neck a bit more than usual (maybe I'm just imagining the symptoms). What are the symptoms? Could my description be it? How fast do the symptoms kick in?

Hi. The only way to know if you have AS is to go to a reputable rheumatologist. There is no way to answer your questions. If you think you may have AS then you need to see an arthritis doctor, a rheumatologist. AS is a genetic form of arthritis, so just because you had or have an std, & some back &  neck pain doesn't mean that you have AS. Only a rheumatologist can give you the proper tests to know whether or not you have AS. Good luck.

Maillidrek, I the most common trigger for almost all if not all is thought my MDs to be infection.  This being said, the chlamidida you are speaking of is it STD or NON-STD chlamidia? Yes, there are non-STD forms of Chlamydia, and they are associated with inflamatory autoimmune diseases like AS.  Now, do you have AS that is a question only a doctor can answer by doing blood tests (for inflamation markers and the gene marker), xrays and maybe a MRI to see if there is any damage or imflamation to the areas of the hips and lower back.  Please ask your father for his Dr, and get checked out because if you do have AS the sooner you know the more able you are to fight it.  I hope this helps and I wish you good health.  P.S.please for five spelling and typos I am not seeinwell this week w/ iritis.

I think the disease you are referring to is Reiters syndrome.  It is similar in symptoms to Ankylosing Spondylitis, but can occur in people with STD exposure.  I hope that helps!

I haven't heard of a connection between these two things. I guess a range of things can "trigger" AS but the important thing is, as Lisa says, is to check with your doctor as soon as possible. Good luck with this...
