I haven't been diagnosed with a thyroid condition but I did have an ultrasound and they discovered that my thyroid was full of cysts. The rheumy was the one who picked it up and many people comment on my swollen throat. When my flare ups are bad I do feel as though my thyroid is more swollen. I have also noticed a corelation to diet. If I eat a lot of white flour/yeast I seem to have issues with swallowing. I then have to eliminate it from my diet for a few days to a week and it then seems to go back to normal.
Hope this assists.

The dr's keep re-testing my thyroid and it does feel a bit enlarged and sometimes have difficulty swallowing. Not sure if that part is related to the neurological problems I've been having lately. All the thyroid tests come back fine though.
Thanks Samantha. I am curious as to why they are re-testing is that due to other symptoms not just the enlargement/swallowing difficulties? And what is the levels that have come back from your test? One GP told me that the range is just a guide and worked with me until I felt better within myself, lucky for me that my good level is in the range but I have met others that feel best at levels out of the normal range.
They keep re-testing it because they said the blood tests can be unreliable. I have symptoms of hypothyroid so when new symptoms pop up that cant be explained by AS and sound more like my thyroid they test it. I don't know what my levels were...they only said "normal". I only recently learned that your levels can be off and not quite abnormal so they just say normal and move on. I will ask at my next visit for a copy to see what my levels were.
I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and therefore symptoms of my IBS were not picked-up, Dr's had assumed that the changes in my bowel habits were reflective of my fluctuating Thyroid levels.
I have now made the connection that consuming starch derived from Corn as well as significant levels of stress causes me to AS flare-ups which are characterised by severe back pain, headaches (migraines), feeling like I have swollen all over, funny taste in my mouth, burning urine and poor circulation.
I am managing the flare-ups by getting the corn out of my system, reducing my stress and doing gentle exercise. I have been doing some walking meditation which has been especially beneficial as I need to rest/relax but also stay active.
