I don't know if anyone will have an answer but here it goes. Does anyone know if it is safe to get a tattoo while on Humira? I have wanted to get a compasion symbol on my arm for a really long time. A reminder to show myself compasion even when my body isn't cooperating. I know it's ok to do subq injections, I am guessing i will have to be vigilant about infection. I have only had 2 shots.

I don't know about humira but i am on enbrel and have had tattoos done. Go to a reputable tattoo artist and state the facts. If they are any good they should be able to give you the correct advice. But i think it comes down to a personal choice

I had a tattoo done about 3 weeks ago.  I've been on Humira since November.  I was worried about it but it healed just fine.  I was super careful about infection and checked it constantly.  Tattoo artists all seem to have different opinions on what to use afterwards (lotions vs. Ointments).  I've tried them all and they all seem to help heal the tattoo the same.  So, since there isn't much of a difference, I used A&D ointment to help it heal instead of a lotion.  It worked great.  I suggest letting the artist know that you are prone to infections and would like to use a medicated ointment and ask for his/her suggestions.  Good luck!

I have had tattoos done before while on humira. They just take a bit longer to heal and you have to be more aware for infection. Also, as others have said, make sure its a reputable artist and clean needles!

Great feedback everyone! I am actually a professional tattooist and it was very refreshing to see educated folks giving out very sound advice. Go in and ask questions. You should get all the answers you need. If not, then find someone who is willing to sit down with you.  I haven't been tattooed since my Remicade treatment began a few months ago but my buddy gets tattooed and he does just fine.
Rose had a great suggestion about asking for autoclave records. Nice job! A good shop should be clean AND smelling good too. I personally will judge any establishment based on the care of there restroom. The upkeep on the restroom will reflect the overall care of the business (tattoo shop, diner, pub, etc).
Good luck on all your choices and have a great day! Take care!

Don't forget to ask for a recent spore count from the autoclave of whatever tattoo place you go to!  Otherwise ..  Heck, you could always wait until you are on a break from the biologics (like if you get cold or flu you have to fight, or if you have a procedure scheduled).   I have ink that I got before diagnosis, and one I might have touched up at some point.   I'll have to decide then if I do it while on the meds (Enbrel) or while I am on break.  Good luck!

No problem.
P.S.  I know hundreds of people with ink and none have contacted HIV. Or even thought it was a concern. HIV from a tattoo? Come on, this is. It the middle ages.

It's your choice. For me I've been on Humira for ten years now a a research patient and I have wanted to get a tattoo as well, I've just never been able to try it. My research nurse threatened to slap me in the head if I ever showed up with one and that's been my little reminder that it's probably not a good idea. I'm sure the risk is very low but when dealing with medications like this, I'm going with better safe than sorry. Good luck if you decide to go ahead.

I, personally, would not run the risk of an infection and all potential problems that could follow.

You seem to already know the answer. Theoretically it's safe, but susceptibility to infection is always a concern since the medications have reduced the immune system response. Funny enough that the traditional infection fear for tattoos is HIV, and people with AS reportedly, while not immune, will not develop symptoms of AIDS or it will develop at a much slower pace than the rest of the population.

As far as I am aware there should be no problem at all, as long as you are scrupulous about hygiene.
